Is Spravato® Right for Me? Clients interested in Spravato® will start with an in-person consultation with Marlene Pino, PFMHNP-BC who is a REMS certified practitioner. Consultation will include a psychiatric evaluation that includes a thorough medical and mental health history along with a discussion of your mental health goals and treatment expectations to ensure Spravato® is right for you. Basic requirements include a diagnosis of either Treatment Resistant Depression or Major Depressive Disorder. Both diagnoses share characteristics of constant or extreme sadness that hasn't gotten better after trying traditional depression medications. Please Note: It is essential to remember that SPRAVATO® should be taken alongside an oral antidepressant as part of your treatment plan

What is Spravato®/esketamine, how does it work, is it safe? Spravato® is a prescription nasal spray that contains Esketamine, which is made from the anesthetic Ketamine. Unlike traditional antidepressants (that primarily target serotonin), Spravato® works by affecting the NMDA receptors in your brain to improve neuronal connections to create new neural pathways which improve your overall mental health. Spravato® is the only FDA approved ketamine substance for the treatment of depression. It has been extensively researched, tested and investigated as a type of ketamine treatment that has been shown to be most effective and safe in treating depressive disorders. Spravato® is only available at REMs certified clinics under the care of an REMs Certified Provider.

Benefits of Spravato® Embracing Hope in the Face of Persistent Depression: Studies show that traditional psychotropic medications do not help 30% of people with major depression. Spravato® offers a second chance as an FDA-approved medication that when used in conjunction with a traditional antidepressant can provide relief from depression within hours to days, and with a full course of treatment can even effectively fully treat depression and achieve full remission from your depressive symptoms.

Is Spravato® Covered by Insurance? Spravato is the only FDA approved esketamine treatment for depression and is covered by some insurances. At this time Medicaid, United Healthcare and Cigna are accepted at Red Rocks Psychiatry for Spravato® treatment with more to come in the near future.

Typical Treatment Course and Preparation.

What Can I expect during a Spravato® Treatment? Marlene Pino, PFMHNP-BC and Certified Spravato® REMS Provider will help you navigate your mental health journey during your in-office Spravato® session. In your treatment room you will have a lounge chair with a cozy blanket, access to ear plugs and an eye mask. Feel free to bring your own music with headphones, Journal and water. You can set your intention for your treatment with your provider before settling into to your private room. Baseline vital signs will be performed and then you will self-administer the Spravato® treatment under the supervision of Mrs. Pino. You can then relax, listen to your music or journal during your session. You will have a call light if you need additional assistance from your provider. Vital signs will be reassessed within 40 minutes of initial administration. Once your session has ended (about 110 minutes) your vital signs will be reassessed and if they are within normal limits and the side effects of the esketamine has worn off, you can go home with a trusted person to ensure your safety. Side effects during treatment may include: dizziness, an out-of-body experience, sedation, headache, nausea, anxiety, excitability or the need to urinate. Because of the potential side effects you must avoid driving or making any important decisions until the following day, after a good night's sleep.

How Do I begin Treatment with Spravato®? Step 1. Schedule a Consultation with Mrs. Pino for evaluation and to ensure that Spravato® is right for you. Step 2. You will be enrolled into the REMS program, verifying insurance benefits and then the medication will be prescribed and delivered. Once the medication has been delivered you will be scheduled to begin treatment. Step 3. Treatment. See "what can I expect during Spravato® Treatment" Step 4. Evaluation. We will have a discussion about your experience, overall effect on your mental health and plan further treatment for the best outcomes.
